Transcript: Robyn Allen, Study-Tour Teacher, Australia

Hello! My name is Robyn. I live on Bribie Island in Queensland, in Australia. I am 62 years old, and I have a husband and two grown children. I’m a study-tour teacher at a school called St John’s Anglican College. I’ve worked as a study-tour teacher now for over eight years. We mostly have Chinese students. (In the past we have had Japanese and Korean.) They come during the Chinese school holidays, and they are usually aged between five and 17 years of age.

Now a day in my life as a study-tour teacher starts with me waking up at around 6 o’clock in the morning. I have breakfast, I get dressed and I get ready for school. About 7.10, I start driving to school. It takes me about 15 minutes to get to school. I arrive at about 7.30 to school. I like to arrive early because I come up into my classroom, and I like to prepare my room for the day. For example, if I was doing mapping, I might put the outline of Australia up on the board. I also like to put what we are doing for the day up on the board to tell the students about it.

Around 8 o’clock, I go to the administration building and I sign in. I might collect any photocopying that I have; speak to the staff. At 8.15, I will go down and start to greet the students. Say hello to their home-stay families. Make sure everything’s OK. Help to resolve any issues if there’s problems at all. By 8.30, all the students have arrived. We count the students, make sure we’ve got them all, then we walk them up to the classroom.
