Transcript: Kanchan Singh, Entrepreneur and owner of two cat cafés

The most important thing I think my parents taught me is scrappiness. When I started Crumbs & Whiskers a year ago, I didn’t have that much money. I did a Kickstarter for it, and the rest came from my personal funds. But something that they always taught me was how to be okay with very little and how to turn very little into something that looks like a lot. Like, when I was in my teens, I would totally go dumpster diving, and they were totally okay with it because they understood the, like, the kind of the value of the small things that get thrown away that you can kind of reuse. And so that kind of same principal is what I’ve been able to apply in my business of just being really scrappy and creating amazing things out of very little, and it’s just been so useful. I wouldn’t have a business otherwise if I didn’t have that mentality already because I started with so little.

My dream for Crumbs & Whiskers is to be synonymous with the words “cat café.” So I almost want people to think “cat café” and then think “Crumbs & Whiskers.” And I kind of want to be in multiple cities in the US. From a business standpoint, I want to be in multiple cities in the US. I want to be a very, very loved brand, if that makes sense, because of what we do for our customers. And then on the animal welfare side, I want to have thousands of adoptions. I want to get to a place where Crumbs & Whiskers has facilitated 10,000 adoptions and all these fosters and so much more awareness for cats in the community. And also, that [creates] much space in shelters, because when we remove cats from shelters, we’re creating more spaces in shelters, which reduces euthanization rates, as well, because now you can take in more cats before you need to get rid of any, really. And to really lower that rate down in the cities that we’re in, and to, like I said, have a lot of adoptions and help a lot of cats. So make people really happy, give cats a better life, and be a nationally recognized, kind of, company.
