When does he go out to shoot in autumn and winter?
I mean, it’s usually dictated by the weather. So, if I see particularly interesting weather coming in — whether that’s a real high and you know you’re going to have really clear, still air where you might get some beautiful reflections in the morning and so on — when that happens, I don’t have a choice, you’re out there, because those days are few and far between. So, you could be at home at night, quite tired, and suddenly the weather forecast comes on after the news and you go, “Oh well, I’m up at 3.00 in the morning, so, by the looks of it, to get out and to do that shot I’ve been planning to do.” So, I get up and I sneak out of the house and try not to wake up everyone and I head off. Sometimes I will have a very specific plan. Other times, I’ll just have a rough idea of, “I want to go to that lake”, or a certain area in the Beara [Peninsula], or sometimes I might just head off going, “I know it’s going to be a good morning. I’m going to head out in the car and I’m just going to see where my instinct kind of takes me and where I end up”. That usually works out quite well. There’s very rarely a morning that I come back empty-handed. So, I would usually head out, if I have a particular location in mind, I would have an actual image in mind that I want to make. So, I spend the time in the car usually heading to where I’m going kind of visualizing what I’m going to do, and almost kind of getting into just seeing the image in my head, knowing exactly what I want to do when I get there. And it’s a lovely, peaceful time. It really slows me down, gets me thinking, it’s not wasted time. And so, by the time I get to where I’m working, and if the conditions are right, I can usually get to work straight away. And that’s the beauty of working in a landscape that I know really well. Because I know so many of these locations, I almost know exactly what I’m going to do before I get there. And if the light looks right and the conditions are right, I can work quite quickly.
