Listen to a minute of audio or video material. Then, replay it one phrase at a timejeweilsat a time, pausing between each phrase. Repeat each phrase aloud, focusing on the accent and intonation. With a video, turn on the subtitleUntertitelsubtitles so that you can read as well as listen.

    2. Here is my news

Imagine your day, or your week, as a news report on the radio. Give the headlines and then some more details. You could include things that your family or friends have said or told you.

    3. Quick quotes

Look at some famous, funny or inspirational quotationZitatquotations. It takes only a minute to read three or four of them and choose a favourite. If you’re alone, read it out loud. Try to learn it by heartauswendigby heart. One good source is BrainyQuote (look at their website, or follow them on social media).

    4. Pick a podcast

If you’re a beginner, choose something easy that’s aimed at learners – search for phrases like “slow English”, “simple English”, “slow news”. Otherwise, just search for a podcast on a topic that interests you, such as sports, comedy, true crime. You can, of course, also listen to Spotlight’s very own podcast, English, please! Admittedly, it’s a 15-minute podcast (not ten), but the time will fly – so we think it’s OK to include it here.

    5. Get quizzy

Have a go at a quick online quiz. The Sporcle website is great for trivia quizzes on all sorts of topics.
