In homes all across the United States, eating in just isn’t what it used to be. That’s thanks, in part, to two trends that are redefining how busy families are putting food on the table.

One of the hottest dining trends this year is “Amazoning and Uberizing” the restaurant industry, according to Baum + Whiteman, International Food + Restaurant Consultants.

The company president, Michael Whiteman, says that tech-driven food-delivery services are aimed at the ultimatehöchster, -e, -esultimate consumer convenienceVerbraucherfreundlichkeitconsumer convenience, with food brought quickly to homes, offices, and even hotel guests.

“Smartphoners, to latch on to sth. (ifml.)etw. übernehmenlatching on to the easeBequemlichkeitease of locating a restaurant, ordering, paying, and getting loyalty points without ever speaking to a human being, are driving this revolution,” writes Whiteman in his company’s report on dining trends for 2016.

Getting in on high-speed home delivery are such well-known tech giants as Google, UberEats, Amazon Prime Now, Grub Hub, and Yelp.

“None actually makes food,” continues Whiteman. “They’re middlemen connecting restaurants and customers, collecting feeGebührfees and personal information about who orders what, when, and from which restaurants.”

    Delivery in just 15 minutes

Those who are in the meal-making business are listening, though. Starbucks added a delivery-only department to its premisesGeschäftsräumepremises in the Empire State Building in New York. Domino’s Pizza now has delivery vehicles with warming ovens. And Chipotle Mexican Grill is creating a second assembly lineFertigungsstraßeassembly line so that it can increase its delivery volume. In Whiteman’s words: “They’re all racing to your door.”

The services come with varying menus, delivery chargeGebührcharges, and times. The Amazon Prime app will get food delivered from supermarkets and gourmet shops in some New York neighborhoods in just one hour for $7.99. Give them two hours to get the food to the door, and delivery is free. That same app gets entirekomplett, vollständigentire menus delivered in an hour or, if the address is in Seattle, just 39 minutes. The Postmates Pop app promises delivery in San Francisco in only 15 minutes.

Facebook has added professional reviews from Bon Appetit, Eater, and the San Francisco Chronicle, reports the International Business Times. Whiteman says: “Amazon is teaming up with Fresh Nation to to bypassumgehenbypass supermarkets entirely, delivering food from farmers’ markets directly to homes. The second home-delivery trend in the US might seem a bit more palatableschmackhaft, angenehmpalatable to fans of home-cooked meals like Mom used to make. Meal-kit services offer home-delivered fresh ingredients complete with the recipe. Some services, such as Home Chef and HelloFresh, offer a complete range of meals, while others specialize in a particular style, such as vegan, southern fareKost, Verpflegungfare, or smoothies.

Home Chef, headquartered in Chicago, makes weekly deliveries of everything needed to make a meal in 30 minutes. They deliver to 90 percent of the US via their partner Federal Express.

“Our founder, Pat Vihtelic, was a busy professional working at a bank,” Home Chef executiveFührungs-executive team member Rich DeNardis told Spotlight. “He found there wasn’t a good opportunity for meal planning and groceryLebensmittelladen-grocery shopping and he found he was really missing the experience of cooking at home. When we talk to our customers, they like working with us because often they are busy households with little kids running around and it is difficult to find the time to fit it all in.”

Everything (except the lobsterHummerlobster) offered by Home Chef is $9.99 a servingPortionserving with a minimum delivery of $40 plus a $10 delivery charge.

“Most of our customers order three meals per week,” DeNardis said. “It’s delivered in a single package that is insulated and contains ice packs so the ingredients can be transported safely. The produce is fresh, the meats are frozen originally, but arrive to the customer thawed. The company offers three vegetarian options each week, in addition to seafood, such as salmonLachssalmon, shrimpGarneleshrimp, and a seafood broilgegrillte Meeresfrüchteseafood broil. “The statistic is that four out of five Americans like to cook,” DeNardis said. “This is a way for them to be able to cook. It’s nice because you control it. You see the ingredients going in. If you have a low sodium dietnatriumarme Kostlow sodium diet, you simply do not add salt.”

    Home cooking made in Germany

HelloFresh got its start similarly to Home Chef — this time, in Berlin after co-founders Dominik Richter and Thomas Griesel grew tired of working late hours and longing for home-cooked meals. “After examining business models from Sweden to Japan to very local ideas, they and a group of like-mindedgleichgesinntlike-minded individuals formulated the recipe for HelloFresh,” said Rebecca Lewis, a registeredamtlich zugelassenregistered dieticianErnährungswissenschaftler(in)dietician at the company. “The team started early in 2012 packing shopping bags in Berlin, Amsterdam, and London, hoping to target the highest-density population areaGebiet mit der höchsten Bevölkerungsdichtehighest-density population areas in Europe. Quite quickly, they started getting requests from people outside those areas who all wanted to become a part of the HelloFresh family.”

They to launchauf den Markt kommenlaunched on the East Coast of the United States in December 2012 and have offered their service nationwide since 2014.

The majority of HelloFresh customers are families with two incomes, including young couples, families with young children, and couples whose children have left home, Lewis said.

The service offers three different box types: classic meals with meat and fish options; vegetarian meals; and family meals that are kid-friendly, often with a twist on classic comfort foodHausmannskost, Trostessencomfort food but with less spice. The minimum order is three meals for two people, and is a weekly subscriptionAbo-subscription service. Like Home Chef, HelloFresh packages come with premeasured ingredients and step-by-step recipe cards.

“Many customers come to us because they’re bored and stuck in a recipe rutSpurrille; hier: Trottrut,” Lewis said. “They’re tired of making the same four or five recipes over and over again. Health is also a contributing factor for customers, and a top priority for us, as we believe that cooking at home is the simplest way to take control of your health. We make sure meals are nutritionally balancedernährungsphysiologisch ausgewogennutritionally balanced and portion-controlled, so customers can take that worry off the table. HelloFresh has solved the ‘What’s for dinner tonight?’ problem for its subscribers.”
