The many fans who have been waiting impatiently for a new novel by American writer Paul Auster are in for a surprise. 4 3 2 1 is an ambitiousanspruchsvoll, ambitioniertambitious work of fiction that follows the life of one main characterFigurcharacter, Archibald Ferguson, in four different versions. Working with the same group of characters, Auster puts the people around Archibald into a jigsawPuzzlejigsaw of politics, sport and family fortunes, exploring the different ways in which that jigsaw can be put together.

The novelist’s love of New York City plays a major role, but it’s above all Auster’s fascination with writing as a way of making sense of America in the 1950s and 60s that stays with the reader. It’s a long book, as it needs to be, but every word is important in what Auster calls, “the land of ink”.
