    Boating skills

sailsegelnSailing involves a complex set of skills. First, you have to launchzu Wasser lassenlaunch your boat into the water. Then you have to use the sails to harnessnutzenharness the power of the wind. You need to know your starboardSteuerbordstarboard (right, when facing forwards) from your portBackbordport (left) and your foreBugfore (front) from your aftAchternaft (back). The two basic manoeuvres are gybehalsengybing (sailing before the wind) and tackwendentacking (sailing into the wind). Take care as the boomBaumboom comes across, or you could be knocked on the head and fall into the water as a man overboard. Try to stay afloatsich über Wasser haltenstay afloat and not capsizezum Kentern bringencapsize the boat (turn it over).

rowrudernRowing is much easier if you remember to sit facing the sternHeckstern (rearrückwärtigrear end of the boat) with the bowBugbow (front end) behind you. Take an oarRuderoar in each hand, dipeintauchendip the oar bladeRuderblattoar blades (flat ends) into the water and pull hard towards yourself. Try to stay in deep water, so that you don’t run agroundauf Grund laufenrun aground. But don’t worry if you bump into the bankUferbank, because the fenderFenderfenders that hang from the sides of the boat will protect you.
