Like most Germans, the three generations of the Naumann family find that being able to speak English is a useful skill to have in day-to-day life.

Mum Steffi is starting an online business; Dad Thomas is involved with an international charityWohltätigkeitsorganisationcharity; son Jonas, 19, is studying abroad but is experiencing some problems; younger daughter Sofie, 15, has a school project to do; and Grandpa Klaus has a new interest in his retirement.

Here, you can follow two of their adventures — those of daughter Sofie and Grandpa Klaus — and find out what kind of language they need as they go about their lives. If you want to learn more about the rest of the family, make sure to read our language feature in issue 7/20 of Spotlight magazine!

    Daughter Sofie

Sofie’s English teacher has set her pupils a project for the summer holidays. They should each research a topic that interests them and then give a presentation to the class. Sofie has chosen to research climate change — but she is having some problems with her research.

Sofie: Oh, Mann!
Sofie: Ich bin kein Idiot, Papa!
    Dad: Was denn zum Beispiel?
Sofie: Hier steht „see also“. Das ist einfach: „siehe auch“. Aber was bedeutet „citation needed“?
Sofie: Oh, echt? Nein, das wusste ich nicht.
    Dad: Google mal „simple…“
Sofie: Ja, hab’s schon.

    Grandpa Klaus

Klaus has recently retired. With time to sparehier: übrig habenspare, he’s now writing his life story and sharing it online on a history site. Having lived in the former GDR (German Democratic Republic)DDRGDR, Klaus’s personal memories are of international interest and someone contacts him from across the Atlantic.
