Denver: The Mile-High City
In the March issue of Spotlight, we go west with Franz Marc Frei, who tells us about how the Rocky Mountains have shaped both Colorado and the people of the state. This week, we pay a visit to Denver, the capital of Colorado. It's called the "Mile-High City" because it is exactly one mile, or 5,280 feet (1,609 metres) above sea level. This is not the Wild West, but it is definitely the west — the downtown district is just 24 km away from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
Denver is a patchwork of neighbourhoods and you'll need to know the difference between LoDo, Five Points, Golden Triangle, LoHi, Riverfront and RiNo to enjoy life in this dynamic city. Let's start.
