Seven sights of Ireland for St Patrick's Day
On Wednesday, 17 March, the Irish at home and abroad, from Armagh to Zanzibar, will celebrate Saint Patrick's Day, Ireland's national holiday. Patrick is believed to have arrived in Ireland around the year 400; by the time he died, he had changed a pagan country into a Christian one. Four hundred years after his death, a group of monks created the country's most important cultural artefact — a book. Their beautifully illustrated manuscript of the Gospels became The Book of Kells. It can be seen at Trinity College in Dublin.
In The Secret of Kells, Tomm Moore turned Celtic history and fantasy into one of the unexpected delights of this year's Oscar awards season.
