Five things to do in Johannesburg
South Africa's largest city is a vibrant mix of race and culture. Joburg, as Johannesburg is commonly known, was founded in 1886 when Americans, Australians and Europeans arrived to make their fortunes in the Highveld's gold-mining industry. As the host city of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, Joburg is hoping for a similar influx of foreigners next year — though it's more likely they will be there to watch a good game of football than to look for gold. If you plan to visit the city, here are some of our personal recommendations to get your trip off to a good start.
1. For a spectacular view of Johannesburg and Soweto township, go to the "Top of Africa" on the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre, the tallest building in Africa.
2.
The Market Theatre Company in downtown Joburg was established in 1976, during the the days of protest theatre, and it is still going strong today, focusing mainly on socio-political issues.
3. A good tip when visiting a new city is to taste some of its authentic dishes. Gramadoela's African Restaurant in the Market Theatre Complex is the place to do just that. Cape Malay cuisine is their speciality, but if you're feeling adventurous you could order a crocodile steak or try some ostrich. Moyo at Zoo Lake offers a wonderfully atmospheric African setting. The buffet menu is an excellent choice, with lots of tasty African food to sample. You can also enjoy some relaxing live music here during the evenings.
4. For an intense and thought-provoking experience, visit the Apartheid Museum. South Africa's
controversial racial history is shown through a stunning collection of photographs, film footage and artefacts. Visitors receive either a "white" or "non-white" identity card upon entry and are transported back to the 70s and 80s apartheid era as they walk through the rooms. Cost: R25 (€2) for adults.
5. Montecasino is not just for gamblers. A vast choice of entertainment makes it an excellent place to spend the day or night. One can walk through the Bird Gardens, eat, drink, shop and even take a hot air balloon ride.
