Procedure
- Download the listening crossword in the online copy file above. Make copies and cut them apart.
- Ask a student to prepare a mini-presentation on the origins of Halloween (a maximum of five minutes) for the next lesson.
- In the next lesson, listen to the presentation. How do people in their country feel about Halloween?
- Explain to the class that they are going to hear two dialogues. Set the scene: Eddie and Kate are preparing to go to a Halloween party.
- Play the recording (dialogues 1 and 2).
- Hand out the multiple-choice questions. Students should read the questions and choose the answer (a, b or c) that fits best.
- Hand out the crossword. Students should take their answers and transfer them to the crossword grid. If their answers are correct, the words will all link to one another in the same way crossword answers do. Point out that there will be empty squares in the crossword when they have added their answers.
- Write on the board the following sentence from dialogue 1: “It was so hot in that ______. It was a ______!” Ask students to complete the crossword with the missing words. (Answers: Down: 1. pumpkin; 2. huge; 3. vampire; 4. sweets; 7. costume. Across: 4. six; 5. nightmare; 6. scary.)
- In dialogue 4, Ian tells Kate to leave her broomstick at the door. What did Kate dress up as?
- The exercises on pages 4-5 in Spotlight plus can be assigned for homework.
