Procedure
- For homework, ask your class to study pages 8-11 of this month's booklet, which are about comma usage.
- Download and make copies of the online copy file found at www.spotlight-online.de/teachers/spotlight-in-the-classroom
- This is the text "Fur-trading post" (p. 9), from which the commas have been removed.
- In the lesson, get students to recapitulate the main comma rules, using their own example sentences. How do these rules compare to the German rules?
- Distribute the copies. Ask students to work individually to insert the eight missing commas in the text. They may refer to the booklet. Allow five minutes.
- Get the class to compare their choices with a partner.
- Bring the class together and have a quick feedback session. The students should read the text back to you, giving reasons for their comma usage.
