Time Level
60 minutes difficult

On the bright side? On the bright side?

Procedure

Before the lesson, make copies of the questionnaire in the Copy File. Type out the text "Don't worry - be happy!", omitting all the vowels. Cut out the photo on page 11 and paste it next to the retyped text. Make copies.

  • Pass out the text copies and study the photo together with the class. Who is the man? What does his sign mean? ("nigh" = literary term for "near" or "soon"). Why is he there and what is he looking at? Collect adjectives to describe this man.
  • Ask students to read the text quietly and fill in the missing letters with the correct vowels. Allow 10 minutes.
  • Do a feedback slot. Clarify any words.
  • Explore other reasons why people are inclined to be optimists or pessimists.
  • Distribute copies of the questionnaire. Students work individually to complete it. Allow 5 minutes.
  • Get students to compare and discuss their answers with a partner. Allow 10 minutes.
  • Write the following on the board:

1 point for a answers, 2 points for b answers, 3 points for c answers.

Ask the class to calculate their scores. Read out the "If you scored…" results. - Find out who has the highest score in the class.

Results: If you scored 18 and more… You're an optimist!

You are an enthusiastic person who always tries to see the positive side of life. You know how to enjoy yourself and you don't waste time worrying about things that may never happen. Your optimism can be contagious, but you'll have to deal with some "wet blankets" out there who will try to rain on your parade.

If you scored 12 - 17 You're a realist!

You have a practical approach to life, which makes you an easy-going and relaxed person. You accept life's ups and downs and you are seldom sad or depressed. People rely on you for good advice. Mind you though, you can be too serious at times and lack imagination. You need to show your feelings a bit more.

If you scored 8 - 11 You're a pessimist!

Don't worry so much! You need to learn how to enjoy the present and the good things in life. Try and turn your negative thoughts into positive ones. Remember that there are many people in worse situations than you. Behind every cloud is a silver lining. Do things that make you happy and trust in the process of life!
