Procedure
- Ask the class to read pages 38-39 in advance.
- Download "Molly Malone" from the internet, e.g. here
- Find out who in the class has been to Ireland. Give them time to briefly recall their impressions.
- Let students take it in turns to read the article aloud.
- Open up a discussion, using the questions: Why would you visit Dublin? Can Dublin be compared to a city in your country?
- Hand out copies of "Cockles & Mussels" (copy file). In pairs, have the class read the song and complete it with the most suitable word in bold. Allow five minutes.
- Pairs merge with another pair to compare songs.
- Ask these small groups to now work out and rehearse a tune (pop, rap, etc.) for any two verses of the song. Or they can compose another verse. Tell them that the best group will receive a prize. Allow 10 minutes.
- Listen to the songs. The class votes on the best performance. Award the prize and smaller consolation prizes if you wish.
- Play a recording of the song "Molly Malone". As they listen, the class should correct their version, if necessary.
