Procedure
- Photocopy the article for your class.
- Download and make copies of the Copy file.
- As a lead-in, find out what famous crimes your students know of. Do they know anything about the Lindbergh story? Set the scene by reading aloud the first four paragraphs of the article.
- Hand out the copies. Explain that the excerpt has been stripped of its grammatical features and contains only content words that carry the main information load.
- Ask students to work alone or in pairs to "add the grammar" such as articles, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions, as well as extra punctuation. You may want to do the first sentence together.
- Go round and help out where needed.
- Ask the learners to exchange and read each other's texts.
- Hand out copies of the article, allowing the students to check with the original excerpt on page 38.
- Find out how your students' versions compare to the original in a whole-class feedback round.
- The rest of the article can be read in class or for homework.
