Procedure
- Download the questions in the online copy file above and make copies.
- Start off the lesson with this activity: Write the word BOTSWANA vertically on the board. Ask students to call out any words beginning with the letters related to Botswana. For example: B = Bushmen, O = Okavango Delta, T = tourists.
- Tell your class that they are going to study a text about Botswana. Can they predict its content? Explain that they are going to answer some comprehension questions in writing, and thereby create the text.
- Hand out the online copies. Read out the first question and ask students to write what they think the sentence in the text will be.
- Elicit some answers and put one on the board. The class can elaborate on this answer by adding adjectives, making nouns more specific, and so on.
- Students read and discuss the rest of the comprehension questions with a partner and write down their answers. Give the groups another five minutes to “embellish” their answers and then to link them up to produce a coherent text.
- Ask the class to read the original text on page 10 and compare it with their own ideas.
- Listen to some texts that students have written.
- Invite comments on the original text.
- As homework, students could research five facts about Botswana for the next lesson.
