- Download the 18 vocabulary cards in the PDF above and cut them apart.
- As a lead-in, give each student (a) vocabulary card(s). Ask the students to mingle and find the matching translation.
- The students should read their matching pairs aloud. If there are any incorrect matches, students with those cards mingle again until they find correct pairs.
- Can they guess what the story is about from the cards?
- Dictate these questions to your students. 1. How does Elsie feel about the speaker's job? 2. What things has the speaker found on the bus? 3. Why did she keep the box and carry it around? 4. How did she finally open the box?
- Tell the class that you will play the story. They should listen and write down the answers to the above questions.
- Play the recording. Stop at "...the top finally flips open."
- Answers: 1. She thinks it's terrible, running up and down the stairs. 2. bloomers, mink stole, box; 3. She thought it contained something valuable but she couldn't open it. 4. She used a knife borrowed from a sailor.
