Procedure
- Ask your class to read the article for homework.
- Start off the lesson by looking at the photo on page 22. Have the class name six adjectives to describe Lewis Hamilton.
- Clarify any problems in understanding the article.
- Use the following prompts to spark plenary discussion: 1. Did you like the article? Why / why not? 2. What new facts did you learn about Hamilton? 3. How do you feel about this sportsman and his sport? 4. What are some downsides of Hamilton’s job? 5. How has success affected him? 6. How do you see his future?
- Divide the class into groups of three. Each group gets a worksheet, three counters and a die. They also need a watch.
- Go over the rules with the class:
1. The first player rolls the die and moves forward to the appropriate number on the “circuit”. He / she talks about the person, thing or situation described.
2. Players can win the following points: 5 points for speaking for 30 seconds; 10 points for speaking for 60 seconds; 20 points for speaking for 90 seconds.
3. The second player now plays and so on. The winner is the first player to complete two laps on the “circuit” with the highest number of points.
- Play the game. Monitor the students. Note grammar problems for remedial work in another lesson.
