Keeping an eye on the volcanic sky

The ash is back. Heathrow and Gatwick airports were closed completely for a time yesterday, and flights were grounded in Ireland, Scotland and Wales. If you're looking for information on Eyjafjallajökull, you've come to the right place.

Volcanic interruption

"Eyja" is island. "Fjalla" is mountain. "Jökull" is glacier.

Most of us didn't know that volcanic ash could cause airplanes to crash. And we didn't know that there were volcanoes in Iceland capable of sending so much of that ash into the atmosphere. But now we know how to pronounce Eyjafjallajökull.

Before Eyjafjallajökull, air travel was plain __________. Now it's a nightmare.
