From tweets to grapes: Twitter wine is coming
The microblogging service, Twitter, valued at $1 billion and famous for its 140-character "tweets", is starting a wine business. Twitter is partnering with Crushpad, a winemaking service in San Francisco, to produce Fledgling Wine. Part of the profits will go to Room to Read, an organization that teaches poor children in Asia and Africa to read.
The first two wines, a Pinot Noir and a Chardonnay, will go on sale next August and can already be pre-ordered online. Each bottle will cost $20; Room to Read will get $5 from every bottle sold. The grapes are now being picked by the Twitter staff in Napa Valley's Santa Lucia Highlands.
Twitter founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams wrote on their new wine blog, "The Fledgling initiative embodies two things that are at the core of Twitter's mission: providing access to information and highlighting the power of open communication to bring about positive change."
Noah Dorrance of Crushpad is optimistic about Twitter wine. When asked by CNN if each bottle will have only 140 grapes, he laughed and said, "I wish! There are approximately 800 grapes per bottle."
