Tony Blair's journey with people and power
In his new book, Tony Blair writes about meeting Princess Diana in July 1997, the month before she died, saying he felt uneasy about her affair with Dodi Fayed. She did not want to discuss the subject with him, he recalls.
Blair felt that the royal family's lack of response to the Princess's death was dangerous and he felt a duty to protect the monarchy from itself. Queen Elizabeth rejected his advice, however, and their relationship turned frosty. But a year later, the then prime minister spent a weekend at Balmoral Castle with his wife, Cherie, and the mood was better. They had a barbecue at which the royal family served the food and did the dishes. "You think I'm joking? You're sitting in front of your empty plate and, suddenly, the queen clears it away for you."
