Jamie Oliver is cooking with the iPhone
A lot of people don't cook. They may watch endless cookery programmes on television, but they never actually spend any time in the kitchen. For Jamie Oliver, the star British chef who wants to get us all eating fresh food, that's a scandal. But how do you motivate those who prefer watching TV to preparing prawn linguini?
Well, one way is to use gadgets, like Apple's iPhone. Oliver's new "20-Minute Meals" app, which is filled with recipes and videos for cooking simple, healthy meals in 20 minutes, is now the most popular iPhone program in the UK. More than two billion downloads have been made from Apple's App Store in the past year.
"Technology fascinates me; [it] always has," Oliver told The Daily Telegraph. "Things like Facebook and Twitter are great for bringing people together. The iPhone is simply another brilliant tool for inspiring and helping people to cook fresh food, which is what I've been trying to do ever since I started 10 years ago."
Today, Jamie Oliver's empire consists of two restaurant chains (Fifteen and Jamie's Italian), a cookware company and the Ministry of Food project, which focuses on teaching people how to cook. There's another book on the way as well as a Christmas television series. Somehow, the 34-year-old chef also finds time to cook meals with his wife, Jools, and share them with their three daughters, Poppy, Daisy and Petal.
