Illinois in Chennai at the Royal Court
The action takes place in Illinois — except that Illinois is a windowless room on the fourth floor of a call centre in Chennai. The Indian workers have American identities: Giri is Gary, Vidya is Vicki and Roshan is Ross, who keeps his New York accent even when he isn't working.
The three are the stars of Disconnect, a new play by Anapuma Chandrasekhar at London's Royal Court Theatre. It's about the disconnect between real life and work at a credit-card company in India that pretends it is in the American Midwest.
Disconnect is Anapuma Chandrasekhar's second play. Her first was Free Outgoing. It was about a scandal created by a viral video shot on a mobile phone.
