David Byrne turns New York into Cycle City
Talking Heads singer David Byrne is helping New York City to get on its bike. He takes his bicycle all over the world while on tour, and has cycled in places such as Istanbul and Manila. How does New York compare to other cities? "It's better than some, but there are an awful lot that are way ahead of it," he told the Wall Street Journal.
Because it hopes to triple the number of bicycle commuters by 2015, the city asked Byrne to help with its "Sustainable Streets" plan. One thing that keeps many New Yorkers off their bikes is a lack of safe parking. That's changing, though, since Byrne's bike racks began appearing around the city. One, in the shape of a dollar sign, can be found on Wall Street, and an abstract looking one has been placed in front of the Museum of Modern Art.
