Hendrix and Handel in London
Rock legend Jimi Hendrix died on 18 September 1970 in central London at the age of 27. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of his death, his flat at 23 Brook Street will be open up to the public for 12 days.
Song lyrics, guitars, hippie clothing and other memorabilia will be on display for the Hendrix in Britain exhibition in September. It will be hosted by the Handel House Museum in Mayfair. "We are excited to be celebrating the life of Jimi Hendrix," Sarah Bardwell, director of Handel House Museum, told the BBC.
After moving to Brook Street in 1968, Hendrix learned that Handel had lived in the building, so he headed to One Stop Records in South Molton Street and HMV in Oxford Street to pick up all the recordings of the composer's music he could find. "Clearly he was intrigued by the connection, and we're pleased to be celebrating his own legacy today."
Hendrix in Britain will run at Handel House Museum from 25 August to 7 November 2010. Tickets for the 15–26 September opening of the Hendrix flat in Brook Street cost £8 and can be booked from 1 June.
