Every singer wants to be in Glee

The internet killed Top of the Pops, MTV is not what it once was and hardly anyone watches music on television anymore. Except when Glee is on air. Part comedy, part drama, the show has become a runaway success.

The first episode of the second season was watched by 12.5 million Americans, up 60 percent from last autumn. The show then sold 410,000 downloads of the five songs it featured. Now, some of the entertainment industry's biggest names want to be part of the action. Gwyneth Paltrow and Javier Bardem will star in the second season, and a Madonna special last season was such a hit that a mini-album of the songs was released.  


"What Glee has done for music more than anything else is connect generations," a Fox spokesperson told the Times. "Kids who are 15 are now finding out who Neil Diamond is." A show with school kids singing cover versions of classic pop and rock songs sounds like an unlikely winner, but life is full of surprises. What happened to music TV? It became Glee.
