Young girl with opera house in Australia
With its curving roof forms, the Sydney Opera House is a masterpiece of modern construction and one of the world's most iconic buildings. It was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who received the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honour, for his work in 2003.
Utzon resigned from the Opera House project in 1966 after a series of disagreements with the government of New South Wales, which was alarmed that costs were 1,400 per cent over budget. The bigger scandal, for many, was that when the Sydney Opera House was opened by Elizabeth II, queen of Australia, on 20 October 1973, Jørn Utzon was not invited to the ceremony, nor was his name mentioned.
