The ecstasy of the whirling belly dancer
28.03.2010
Belly dancing involves whirling, a technique that was developed by Celaleddin Rumi, who was born in east Persia — in what is now Afghanistan — in 1207. He was brought to Konya in Turkey by his family when he was a child.
Rumi's "whirling dervishes" worked themselves into a trance so that wherever the dancers turned, they could see the face of God. The word "dervish" comes from the Persian, meaning "a poor man". The whirling dervishes became one of the brotherhoods of Sufis, who got their name from the simple woollen robes they wore: soof is Arabic for "wool".
