Sax at school
The great days of the jazz saxophone began in the 1930s. Johnny Hodges, who led the saxophone section of the Duke Ellington Big Band, was the instrument's first major star. Then, in the early 1940s, players such as Charlie Parker began to move jazz sax away from the big-band sound towards "musician's music" with dramatic, intricate solos.
Rhythm and blues and gospel influences were added in the 1950s, and pioneers such as Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane developed new playing styles. In the 1980s, Kenny G created a popular fusion style called "smooth jazz", and players like Joshua Redman are finding inspiration today by returning to the "traditional" sounds of the 1950s.
