Openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
The GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards in San Francisco are presented to openly LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender) creative professionals. GLAAD was founded in 1985 in New York City in response to what many considered to be sensationalist coverage of the AIDS epidemic in the media.
Along with LGBT, new terms used to describe sexual politics and preferences include SGL ("same gender loving") — sometimes preferred by African-Americans as a way of distinguishing themselves from what they regard as a white-dominated LGBT community — and MSM ("men who have sex with men"), which does not refer specifically to sexual orientation.
