Just as the term operating room has been abbreviated to "OR", the term emergency room has been shortened to "ER". ER is also the title of an American television series created by the late novelist Michael Crichton . It is set in the emergency room of County General Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. The award-winning show ran for 15 seasons, becoming the longest-running primetime medical drama in American television history. The cast included George Clooney as Dr Douglas Ross, Sherry Stringfield as Dr Susan Lewis and Anthony Edwards as Dr Mark Greene.
