Katrina washed away the teddy bear
Four years ago, American film director, producer and actor Spike Lee went to New Orleans to document the disaster caused by Hurricane Katrina, as told by the people still living with its effects. The resulting four-hour film, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, won numerous awards.
As the fifth anniversary of the hurricane approached, Lee went back to New Orleans, hoping to tell the story of the city's recovery. Instead, his new documentary, If God Is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise, is every bit as grim as its predecessor. Lee revisited many people seen in Levees, who are still trying to rebuild their lives. While he was in Louisiana, the region suffered a second disaster: the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that flooded the Gulf Coast with oil.
