Just one more beach bum at Byron Bay
02.08.2009
The Australian seaside town of Byron Bay lies 759 kilometres north of Sydney and 140 kilometres south of Brisbane. The waves at Byron Bay are so popular that beach bums and backpackers come from all over the world to spend months surfing here. The bay's tropical waters have made it a trendy place for scuba diving and snorkelling, but there's been a worrying increase in shark attacks in recent years. Nearby Cape Byron is famous for its wildlife, and whale-watching has become an important part of the local economy.
In 1770, Captain James Cook named Byron Bay after John Byron, grandfather of English poet Lord Byron.
