Enjoying the break
28.03.2011
A breakdancer performs on the streets of San Francisco.
Do you know where the word "breakdance" comes from? The name has nothing to do with the "broken" style of movement the dancers sometimes use. Rather, it refers to the break between stanzas of a song or rap, when only the beats and melody are heard.
During the 1970s, Bronx DJ Clive Campbell — better known as Kool Herc — found he could extend the break as long as he wanted, by switching back and forth between identical records on two turntables. People dancing to Kool Herc's beats came to be known as breakdancers.
