Call before you jump
People from all over the world have travelled to California to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. Many take a bus or a taxi to the "jump point". Police sometimes find abandoned rental cars in the parking lots on the north-east and south-east sides of the bridge.
Wind speeds on the bridge can be as high as 111 km/h, the water temperature in San Francisco Bay can fall to 8 °C and the currents beneath the bridge are extremely strong. As a result, it is believed that many jumpers have been washed out into the Pacific Ocean without ever being seen. To date, more than 1,200 people have jumped to their death from the bridge, averaging one suicide every two weeks.
