Advent in Europe's last dictatorship
A woman makes pancakes in her kitchen in Belarus. The house she and her husband built 50 years ago is without running water and is heated by a wood fire. They couple grow most of their own food. They own one cow and kill a pig each year for meat.
Belarus is a landlocked country between Poland and Russia. It gained its independence from the USSR in 1991, and Alexander Lukashenko has been the nation's president since 1994. He says that if his health is still good, he will run for re-election in 2011. Lukashenko rules with an iron fist. He has been accused of serious human-rights abuses. Two years ago, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice described his regime as "the last dictatorship in Europe".
