Read all about it! The next Spotlight
The May edition of Spotlight goes on sale next Wednesday, 29 April. Eamonn Fitzgerald spoke to Editor-in-Chief Inez Sharp about the next issue.
Fitzgerald: Communicating well is a key to success, but in another language it can be very difficult, especially when it comes to small talk. But the May Spotlight solves that problem, right?
Sharp: Absolutely! Our language feature, "The Art of Small Talk", will give you the skills to chat confidently with strangers and acquaintances. Learn the secrets behind introducing yourself, keeping things positive, asking intelligent questions, and even coming up with excuses to escape from a conversation. We give you useful phrases and tips on appropriate topics for conversation — and tell you what is taboo.
Fitzgerald: England in summer is the focus of our Lifestyle article by Rebecca Perl. What's she got for us?
Sharp:
Rebecca tells us all about what makes the season's high-society events so glamorous. Although the regattas, operas, polo games and horse races used to be reserved for the aristocracy, they are now becoming more open and affordable. With our insider's guide to the festivities, you can put on your most elegant gown or lounge suit and join in the fun.
Fitzgerald: And the Travel section takes us to Montreal.
Sharp: It does indeed. Spotlight's new correspondent, Lorraine Mallinder, invites us to join her as she explores the streets of Canada's island city. From local tastes in small diners and cafes to big-name pop-culture celebrities and centuries of rich history, bilingual Montreal has a great deal to offer. As always, we've included practical information on hotels, restaurants, shops and museums, in case just reading about the city isn't enough for you.
Fitzgerald: The May Spotlight comes with a "Vocabulary boost". What's that?
Sharp: It's a collection of the 50 most important words that you may not know. Our language editors have put together a list of vocabulary that is especially useful to German-speakers. Learning these words — in their proper context — will help you to speak, read and listen to English better.
Fitzgerald: One final highlight of the May Spotlight?
Sharp: Our History section this month introduces readers to Bonnie and Clyde, the legendary partners in crime. The pair has been the subject of many movies and songs, but Mike Pilewski brings us the true story of the Depression-era outlaws.
