Read all about it! The May Spotlight
The May edition of Spotlight goes on sale on Wednesday, 26 April. Eamonn Fitzgerald spoke to Editor-in-Chief Inez Sharp about the next issue.
Fitzgerald: One of the stories on the May cover is titled "Your guide to active London". What's it about?
Sharp: If I think back to the holidays I've taken, the best memories are of adventures and encounters that were unplanned: discovering a small square in your favourite city or getting into a conversation with a stranger. Of course, some planning is necessary for a holiday, but if you are prepared to be active and adventurous, your chances of having a memorable trip will be much greater. For this month's travel feature, I visited London. As I grew up close to the city, I thought it would be difficult to find exciting activities.
I could not have been more wrong. The lovely Thames Path offers views of London most locals will not have seen. Discovering the Old Operating Theatre was amazing — and a bit gruesome. Those experiences and many more make up our active London feature.
Fitzgerald: The language feature is devoted to favourite film scenes.
Sharp: Who doesn't have a favourite film scene that they've watched over and over again? For our language feature this month, we've chosen five classic films and explored their content and vocabulary. From Rhett Butler's famous last line in Gone with the Wind: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!" to Forrest Gump's "Stupid is as stupid does", it's all there. Unfortunately, my favourite film was not included. Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep, is full of wonderful lines, but the line I like best is when the young blogger Julie decides to write about food. She says (something like):"I'll probably need a deadline, otherwise I'll never finish." Every journalist can understand that sentiment.
