How very dare you!
Twice in the space of a week, I've heard the phrase "How very dare you!" dropped into conversation on British television programmes. Unusual construction. I would usually say "How dare you!" when I am feeling offended. Not out loud, of course; I usually just think it. This is probably a good thing when I'm offended in German.
But it seems that these days people — Brits — are saying "How very dare you!" when they are pretending to be offended. And that's Catherine Tate's fault.
Catherine Tate is a British comedienne and writer. And Derek Faye, the character who says "How very dare you!", is a character in her sketch show, The Catherine Tate Show.
It seems that the catchphrase, although it was first heard in the second series of the show in 2006, is alive and well.
And if you hear anyone saying "Am I bovvered?" (Am I bothered?), that's also Catherine Tate's fault. This catchphrase belongs to one of the most recognizable characters from her show, comprehensive school pupil Lauren Cooper.
So there you go: Again what learned!
